Creating the PERFORMANCE
YWDEP members now have a strong collection of material, and will be putting it all together in a performance creation workshop this Saturday facilitated by Margaux Delotte Bennett and Sheila Mirza.
The young women will be empowered to build their own performance by organizing their raw materials into a set with a theme and a title. They will receive 3X5 notecards each containing one element of what they have created so far, along with some other possibilities, and a couple of blank cards for them to fill in with their own brainstorms.
So far, the cards read as follows:
Carnival (song)
No Sympathy (song)
Shiko (rhythm)
KuKu (rhythm)
Group Poem
Group Movement Piece
poetic conversation featuring the combined poetry of three YWDEP artists
Poem by each individual YWDEP member
piece incorporating sax
piece incorporating keyboards
The young women will hopefully be getting together on SUNDAY as well to go over what they create at this Saturday's session.
NEXT weekend Jaqui Macmillan will be present to continue teaching and polish the SHIKO rhythm, and we'll enjoy another Sunday at Malcolm X Park. The girls are also working on a banner - a description along with photos are available on banner facilitator Alexandra Silverthorne's artist blog: http://solarizethis.blogspot.com/2005/07/banner-project.html. CHECK IT OUT!
